SYSGO and Candera present hypervisor based automotive HMI solution

Introducing the vision of a safe and secure networked automotive future

Klein-Winternheim, Germany / Linz, Austria – October 1, 2020 – SYSGO and Candera have built a comprehensive automotive platform which fulfills the demands of a modern car IT architecture. The platform is based on Candera’s Human-Machine-Interface (HMI) design tool CGI Studio and SYSGO’s Secure Automotive Connectivity Platform (SACoP). It provides solutions for safety critical applications such as digital cockpits as well as convenience functionality like vehicle infotainment systems. The internal car infrastructure is protected by means of the secure and extendible gateway which involves the surveillance of connectivity channels as for instance LTE, Ethernet, Wi-fi and CAN.

Innovative Hypervisor based HMI solution realized with SYSGO’s PikeOS and Candera’s CGI Studio

The reference implementation is built upon two boards, one with an R-CAR H3 board from Renesas and another one with an STMicroelectronics Telemaco3P processor.
The digital cockpit and an in-vehicle infotainment system (IVI) run on the Renesas board. These applications were created with the fully scalable and hardware independent CGI Studio. Both displays (cluster & IVI) smoothly communicate with each other. This is possible due to Candera’s powerful messaging and data binding tool Courier Interaction Framework for smooth interaction between the HMI application and external data sources. Flexible, interacting scenes, stunning 3D animations and multi-language support are only a few more features that have been realized with Candera’s CGI Studio.

The Telemaco 3P processor is the link to the outside world and is the hardware basis for the secure gateway functionality of SACoP. It is also used to supply passengers’ tablets and smartphones with internet access. The software is based on SYSGO’s Automotive Connectivity Platform. SACoP takes advantage of the real-time operating system and hypervisor PikeOS. It allows critical and non-critical tasks to be operated simultaneously on one system and guarantees information security by protecting data transfers through strict encapsulation and separation of all communication channels. The partitioning mechanism is complemented by a secure boot process, an integrated intrusion detection system and a firewall, thus satisfying demanding cybersecurity needs. The feature rich intrusion detection system is executed within ELinOS, SYSGO’s robust industrial Linux distribution, long term supported and suitable for automobiles. ELinOS itself is running as a guest operating system on top of PikeOS. The development environment provides a flexible software framework that helps customers design their software architecture.

Candera at Embedded World 2020

Candera at Embedded World 2020

As a leading international world fair with its exclusive focus on embedded technologies, the Embedded World Exhibition & Conference reflects the main trends of the sector. From 25th to 27th February, 2020 more than 900 exhibitors from all over the world showcased their products and services at the exhibition center in Nuremberg/Germany. Unfortunately, the corona situation also affected this fair resulting in a reduced overall number of visitors at the exhibition. However, especially on the second day the attendance of the Candera booth was quite good with high quality leads within the automotive, industrial and home appliances sector.

Candera was presenting a mix of innovative HMI solutions and technologies in the area of embedded HMI design – with novelties in the automotive and home appliances solutions. Highlights at the Candera booth were the „Holi Cluster & IVI Solution” and a newly developed Smart Oven UI.

Holi HMI solution Candera‘s Holi solution, featuring a cluster and IVI solution, has been created with CGI Studio and is based on Linux and Renesas. It shows, how multiple displays are perfectly interacting and communicating with each other. This is possible due to Candera’s powerful messaging and data binding tool Courier Interaction Framework for smooth interaction between the HMI application and external data sources.

Candera’s smart oven user interface with scan & bake app

Smart Oven User Interface

Based on CGI Studio Candera has developed an Android-based smart oven user interface. This full digital UI (with baking and cooking function) of a next generation’s oven, is not only particularly user-friendly and appealing, but has been expanded by a smart Scan & Bake app.The app installed on a conventional smartphone enables to scan the barcodes on the back of common food packaging (e.g. frozen product packaging for pizza, lasagna, etc.) and to transmit this data directly to the oven UI. After one scan the user can directly start the baking process or adjust the settings according to his/her personal choice. The advantage for the user is obvious: this smart UI-interface is particularly user-friendly and enables a quick and easy handling.

Candera announces Membership in the Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) and The Linux Foundation network

Candera proudly proclaims that starting with 15th of May, 2019 it is official member of Automotive Grade Linux (AGL) and The Linux Foundation. With Linux at its core the membership in these powerful networks will support Candera in further facilitating the collaboration across this open source system and leveraging the potential in many of its core markets.

Within the last years the open source operating system Linux has extended its application areas far beyond servers, smartphones, and tablets and has found its way into the automotive industry. In fact, Linux is currently powering infotainment systems, head-up displays and connected car systems for renowned OEMs worldwide like Toyota, Nissan, and Jaguar Land Rover.

As a leading HMI tool provider for the automotive industry Candera GmbH situated in Linz, Austria is dealing with numerous customer projects based on Linux OS, with tendency to rise even more in the upcoming years. The membership in the Automotive Grade Linux (a collaborative open source project bringing together automakers, suppliers and technology companies to accelerate the development and adoption of a fully open software stack for the connected car) and Linux foundation (supported by more than 1,000 members and the world’s leading home for collaboration on open source software, open standards, open data, and open hardware) is an important step for Candera.

“We strongly support Linux as in-vehicle operating system giving our customers maximum flexibility and a strong development community on an open source base,” said Reinhard Füricht CEO of Candera. “With CGI Studio we support TIER1s and OEMs worldwide in creating innovative GUIs like infotainment systems or digital instrument clusters while considering functional safety standards according to ISO26262. The open source approach of Linux perfectly matches with the open and continuous toolchain paradigm of CGI Studio, which can easily be integrated into existing workflows. We’re proud of being part of the Automotive Grade Linux and The Linux Foundation and looking forward to continuing our good cooperation as an official member.”
